Lesson Flop? Help!

So this happens all the time to all of us, especially those of us who are still fairly newer teachers; we teach a lesson that doesn't turn out as well as we'd hoped. This lesson I did with Kindergarten kinda turned out this way so suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

I began the lesson by reading the book "What did you put in your Pocket?" in discussing textures and describing those textures. Next we learned about the magic of color mixing, which is always a crowd pleaser! I had the students make their own secondary colors using tempera cakes on a paper divided into thirds. When those papers were dry the following class the students traced a pocket shape on each section of their painted papers, to use to make their own "What did you MAKE in your Pocket?" Book.


The books were completed by cutting and pasting the colored pockets and title, drawing stitches on their pockets, and writing a single sentence on each page that read "I made (insert color made here.)"

I want to figure out a way for the students to make these more individualized, I hate it when it occurs to me, every single artwork looks the same! Check out the results and let me know how I could make this better! Thanks so much!

  1. There is a really old Dr. Seuss book called "There's a Wocket in my Pocket." You could add onto these by making "wockets" coming out of the pockets. I did wockets as collages with kinders a few years ago, and every one turns out completely different from the rest-and they are pretty cute!

  2. I was going to suggest the same as Jodi. Wockets are so much fun. Kids always love them. THat and I hate mixing with the tempera cakes. Mixing lessons usually do better with liquid. Just my opinion...

  3. I think you could than tell them to add an object with the same color. On a small paper let them drew the object(something they can put inside the pocket), color it,cut it out and glue on or coming out of the pocket.

Like "Very Special Art" I suggest giving freedom to have them put something in that pocket- maybe they could mix all the secondaries, choose their best one when dry, cut out a "pocket" to attach to a contrasting color. Then, if they glue 3 sides but not the top, they could put things in their pocket... maybe things that start with that color. Like for green- Grass, aliens, grapes, etc.

  5. I think it would be fun to leave the top part of the pocket open, and have them draw a favorite animal or figure of themselves to place in the pocket. Also, they could design frames around the borders of the paper (use patterns, etc).
